Admission
The portfolio assessment is necessary to know your technical and conceptual skills in photography. To apply for our Course you must send the following documentation:
- Photographic portfolio of about 15-20 images that are part of one or more photographic projects, even if not closely related to the course in question
The portfolio should be submitted as a single file in pdf format or in a zipped folder.
Course Details.
The course provides students with both theoretical and practical tools to develop a personal and contemporary photographic language on documentary photography, with a focus on the potential offered by modern communication. Students will learn how to transform the concept of a project into a coherent visual narrative, experiment with contemporary languages, and understand the dynamics of documentary photographic production.
The course is held Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
During the course, students will be guided in the development of a personal project exploring the area of Florence and its surroundings. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with the many facets of the city-from its historic neighborhoods to emerging social contexts-gaining insightful information and experiences from locals and creating an authentic and meaningful visual narrative. The course will be structured with a series of theoretical lectures, on-location shooting sessions, editing, proofreading, and dissemination strategies.
- WEEK 1: Methodology
In the first few days, students will develop a proposed photographic project, defining clear objectives and selecting a specific theme. During this module, students will immerse themselves in photographic practice, exploring different visual languages and approaches to documentation. Through hands-on exercises, they will be encouraged to experiment with different styles, such as reportage, narrative photography and conceptual art. Students will also analyze examples of photographic projects by renowned photographers, discussing the emotional and communicative impact of the images.This will help them develop their own visual language and a deeper understanding of photography’s role in authentic storytelling and the different forms a project can take, from editorial and web presentations to installation.WEEK 2: Editing
In the final module, each student will focus on editing their photographic project, a crucial process for achieving coherence and structure in visual storytelling. Students will learn ways to select images, evaluating the contribution of each photograph to the overall narrative. The importance of sequence and presentation will be discussed, analyzing how the arrangement of images can influence audience perception. In addition, critical reflection on one’s work will be encouraged, with dedicated feedback sessions to further refine the final project and come up with effective ideas for the final outcome.RESULTS
The work of the last week will focus on preparing an exhibition of each student’s project and a model of their work. A selection of the images produced will be presented during an event open to the public.
