Through a combination of practical and theoretical learning, you will explore the contemporary languages of documentary photography, delving into narrative techniques and visual tools to tell stories with authenticity and impact.

Admission
The portfolio review is essential to assess your technical and project-based skills in photography. To apply for the Course, you must submit the following documents via the dedicated application form:
- A photographic portfolio consisting of approximately 15-20 images from one or more photography projects, which do not necessarily need to be directly related to the course.
The portfolio must be sent in a single file in pdf format or in a zip folder.
Course details
The course provides students with both theoretical and practical tools to develop a personal and contemporary photographic language in documentary, with a focus on the potential offered by modern communication. Students will learn how to transform the concept of a project into a coherent visual narrative, experiment with contemporary languages, and understand the dynamics of documentary photography production.
The course takes place in person from Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm
Throughout the course, students will be guided in their development of a personal project that explores the territory in and around Florence.
Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the many facets of the city – from its historic neighborhoods to emerging social contexts – in by getting in-depth information and experience from locals and by creating an authentic and meaningful visual narrative.
The course will be structured with a series of theoretical lessons, on-location shooting sessions, editing, review and dissemination strategies.
- WEEK 1: Methotodology
In the first days, students will develop a photographic project proposal, including the definition of clear objectives and selecting a specific theme. During this module, students will immerse themselves in photographic practice, exploring various visual languages and approaches to documentation. Through hands-on exercises, they will be encouraged to experiment with different styles, such as reportage, narrative photography and conceptual art. Students will also analyze examples of photographic projects by renowned photographers, discussing the emotional and communicative impact of the images, as well as ethics.
This will help them develop their own visual language and a deeper understanding of the role of photography in authentic storytelling and the various forms a project can achieve, from editorial and web presentations to installation.
- WEEK 2: Editing
In the final module, each student will focus on editing their photographic project—a crucial process for achieving coherence and structure in visual storytelling. Students will learn techniques for selecting images, evaluating how each photograph contributes to the overall narrative. The importance of sequencing and presentation will be discussed, analyzing how the arrangement of images can influence audience perception. Additionally, critical reflection on one’s work will be encouraged, with dedicated feedback sessions to further refine the final project and find efficient ideas for the output.
- OUTCOME
The work during the final week will focus on preparing an exhibition of each student’s project and a dummy of their work. A selection of the produced images will be showcased during an open event at fsmgallery.
