With the Documentary Photography course you will expand your horizons and develop your skills as a documentary photographer. You will learn the contemporary languages of documentary photography and build your professional network during the course.

With faculty from the Terraproject collective, networking opportunities and important guests you will meet during the course, you can open doors to new job opportunities.

Partnership with CORTONA ON THE MOVE

Starting this academic year, Studio Marangoni and Cortona On The Move are collaborating to offer the students of the Documentary Photography Course an important chance to be protagonists of the festival with their final exhibition, organized during the opening days of the festival.

Cortona On The Move Photography Festival will participate in the Documentary Photography Course with two lectures to discuss the profession of photographers and curating. In addition, students in the Course will have free access to a portfolio reading of their choice during the Cortona On The Move 2025 Photography Festival (one portfolio reading per student).

Target

Documentary Photography is ideal for those who want to learn how to tell real life stories through new languages of photography.
It is perfect if you are a professional or advanced photo amateur and wish to expand your knowledge base.

With this course you will have the opportunity to enrich your portfolio with a quality project and the chance to see it published in a nationally relevant magazine.

Admission

The portfolio assessment is necessary to know your technical and conceptual skills in photography. To apply for our Documentary Photography Course, you must submit the following documentation via the form provided:

  • Photographic portfolio of about 15-20 images that are part of one or more photographic projects, even if not closely related to the course in question
  • Project proposal to be developed during the course

The portfolio must be submitted as a single file in pdf format or in a zipper folder.
The project proposal must be uploaded in pdf format.

Course Details.

The documentary photography course helps to develop the most important skills, important for the creation of documentary projects.
By the end of the course you will be able to conceive and implement projects that tell stories in a coherent way, applying rigorous methodology and developing a distinctive personal style.

This learning process will not only enhance your ability to tell stories through images, but also help you find a unique voice in the panorama of documentary photography.
In addition, during the course you will acquire fundamental editorial skills to prepare your work for publication.

This training will enable you to curate and present your projects in a professional manner, increasing your chances of seeing your work recognized and distributed on publishing platforms. Finally, during the course you will not only improve your technical and narrative skills, but also develop a critical and responsible awareness of the role of the documentary photographer in society.

The course is held in-person on Saturdays from 10 a.m.

The course program includes theoretical and practical frontal lectures, accompanied by reviews with teachers.

Each student will be accompanied in the creation of a personal photographic project that will represent the final portfolio of the course.

Meetings with professionals in documentary photography (photographers, curators, photo-editors) are planned.

Each student has access to the school’s laboratories and library during office hours.
